What We're About
Have you ever wondered why your neighbourhood has changed so much? What is causing the changes and how does it happen? Well, this past summer a group of us from the community came together to form what is now called the Neighbourhood Tour Group to find out the answers to these questions and learn how to deal with gentrification in our community. Gentrification is a process where middle to high income people and high-end businesses move into a neighbourhood that has historically been made up of poor and working class people. This causes property values, rent, and the cost of living to skyrocket - in turn, displacing people with low incomes. Economies, societies, and quality of life are all affected by gentrification, and we want to know in what ways is it affecting you.
The main purpose of this Group is to generate discussion about neighbourhood change, how it is affecting residents, and what can be done to help. Currently we provide walking tours for small groups around the North and Central parts of Halifax, highlighting changes in history and such. Now, we want to see and hear what others have to say, both young and old, about this process by givign them the opportunity to share with us their insights, opinions, rants, ideas, and stories. Our objective with this project is to create an insightful and honest representation about the local experiences and priorities of our community, in the hopes of compiling a small booklet for residents and the neighbourhood in general.
No other publication of this kind has been created and we see it as an opportunity to draw attention to and promote socially responsible development in the community.
If you have any insight, stories, photographs, or historical references relating to the neighbourhood, we would love to see or hear them. We can meet in person or over the phone at a convenient time for you. If you are interested or have any questions or concers, please email the group at neighbourhoodtour@gmail.com
